Lake Superior
Of course, the biggest attraction is the lake itself. Spend the day exploring rocky beaches, skipping stones, watching the waves, or simply finding a quiet spot along the shore. The North Shore is also known for its beautiful agates, especially along rocky beaches and river mouths.

Gooseberry Falls State Park
Just a few minutes away, Gooseberry Falls is one of the area’s signature stops. Explore the series of waterfalls, hike along the Gooseberry River, wander through the woods, or head down to the Lake Superior shoreline. The park has miles of trails, including access to the Superior Hiking Trail.

Split Rock Lighthouse
Head north along Highway 61 to one of Minnesota’s most iconic landmarks. Split Rock Lighthouse sits dramatically above Lake Superior and includes the historic lighthouse, keeper’s buildings, visitor center, and spectacular shoreline views.

Superior Hiking Trail
For hikers, there are plenty of opportunities to get out into the woods. The Superior Hiking Trail winds along the North Shore, with forested trails, river crossings, rocky terrain, and overlooks of Lake Superior. The Castle Danger area has its own trail access, including the West Castle Danger Road Trailhead.

Gitchi-Gami State Trail
Bring your bikes—or just enjoy a walk along the paved trail. The Gitchi-Gami State Trail connects several North Shore communities and passes through beautiful scenery near Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse.

Iona’s Beach Scientific & Natural Area
A little farther north is this unusual Lake Superior beach, known for its distinctive pinkish cobble stones. It’s a beautiful spot for a quiet shoreline walk, photography, and taking in the lake.

Black Beach
Near Silver Bay, Black Beach gets its name from its dark-colored shoreline—a fun and very different North Shore beach experience. It’s a great little stop for photos, a picnic, or exploring the shoreline.

Scenic overlooks & roadside stops
One of the best parts of a North Shore trip is simply driving Highway 61 and stopping whenever something catches your eye. There are overlooks, beaches, rivers, waterfalls, and little pull-offs all along the way. The Palisade Head Overlook and other scenic stops offer those classic Lake Superior views.

Food, drinks & local stops

When you’re ready to take a break from exploring, there are a handful of local favorites nearby. Rustic Inn Cafe is a classic North Shore stop for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and their famous pies. For a lakeside meal, Grand Superior Grill is right along Highway 61 in Castle Danger. And in Two Harbors, Castle Danger Brewery is a fun stop for locally brewed beer and a relaxed North Shore atmosphere.

And then there’s Two Harbors

Just down the road, Two Harbors makes an easy day trip for shopping, dining, the harbor, beaches, and exploring the town’s history. You can spend a morning hiking, grab lunch in town, wander along the lake, and be back at your cabin in time for an evening around the fire.

Winter on the North Shore

The North Shore has a whole different kind of beauty once the snow arrives. The lake, woods, and waterfalls take on a quieter, wilder feel—and Mighty Fine Cabins makes a cozy home base for a winter getaway.

Downhill Skiing & Snowboarding

Lutsen Mountains is a favorite North Shore winter destination, with downhill skiing and snowboarding across the Sawtooth Mountains. Spend the day on the slopes, then head back toward the lake for a warm meal and a cozy evening by the fire.

Cross-Country Skiing

There are miles of groomed and ungroomed trails throughout the North Shore for cross-country skiing. Gooseberry Falls State Park and nearby trail systems offer beautiful winter scenery, with snow-covered forests, frozen rivers, and views of Lake Superior along the way.

Winter Hiking & Snowshoeing

Bundle up and explore the trails in a whole new season. Snowshoeing and winter hiking are a great way to experience the quiet of the North Shore, especially after a fresh snowfall. State parks and the Superior Hiking Trail offer plenty of places to wander.

Snowmobiling

Bring your sled and explore the North Shore by snowmobile! The North Shore State Trail runs nearby, making Mighty Fine Cabins a great home base for a day of riding through the snowy woods. Cruise along miles of groomed trail, take in the winter scenery, and stop in the nearby towns for a warm meal before heading back to the cabin. Then park the sled, warm up by the fire, and settle in for a cozy North Shore evening.
